Anti money laundering enforcement rarely turns on a clever criminal. It turns on a control that was known to be weak and was not fixed in time. This seminar works through eleven real enforcement actions announced in the first half of 2026, across nine countries and ten authorities, and draws out what each one asks of your own firm.

It is the first episode of a continuing half yearly series. Each episode covers only the enforcement actions announced in that six month period, taken from the regulators' own decisions rather than from press coverage.

What you will learn

By the end of the seminar you will be able to:

  • Identify each of the eleven enforcement actions by regulator, country, outcome and legal status, and tell a final decision from one under appeal, a settlement from a conviction, and a referral from a charge.
  • State, for any of the cases, the specific control failure the regulator identified and the principle it establishes.
  • Recognise the same failure appearing in institutions of very different size, sector and country.
  • Describe the full range of enforcement outcomes now in use, from a critical report carrying no fine through to licence withdrawal, criminal referral, a corporate guilty plea and a custodial sentence for an individual.
  • Apply the correct evidential language when discussing enforcement, keeping findings separate from allegations.
  • Identify which of the seven recurring failures your own firm is most exposed to.

The eleven cases

Rakuten Europe Bank (Luxembourg),Saxo Bank (Denmark),MBaer Merchant Bank (Switzerland, with parallel United States action),Canaccord Genuity (United States),Notartreuhandbank (Austria),Storebrand Bank (Norway),MoneyGram International (France),Nordea Finans Danmark (Denmark),TD Bank and its insiders (United States),Ikano Bank (Sweden),and CACEIS Bank UK Branch with the WealthTek collapse (United Kingdom).

Every figure quoted in the seminar comes from the issuing authority's own decision or notice. Where a matter remains under appeal, before a court, or is a referral without charge, the seminar says so and uses the language of allegation rather than finding.

Who should attend

Money laundering reporting officers and their deputies, compliance officers, internal audit, risk and operations staff who own transaction monitoring or customer due diligence, and senior managers accountable for the financial crime framework. It suits holders of the CySEC Advanced and AML certifications, and anyone maintaining continuing professional development under a CySEC or comparable EU obligation.

The material assumes working familiarity with customer due diligence and transaction monitoring. It does not restate the basics.

Supervisory frameworks covered

The cases are drawn from the anti money laundering regimes of Luxembourg, Denmark, Switzerland, Austria, Norway, France, Sweden, the United Kingdom and the United States, as applied by the CSSF, Finanstilsynet in Denmark and in Norway, FINMA, the FMA, the ACPR, Finansinspektionen, the Financial Conduct Authority, FinCEN, the Securities and Exchange Commission, FINRA and the Department of Justice.

The obligations examined are the ones common to all of them: customer due diligence and enhanced due diligence, verification of source of funds, ongoing transaction monitoring and its calibration, sanctions screening, suspicious transaction reporting, record keeping, governance and the three lines of defence, and responsibility for third party, correspondent and white label relationships.

CPD hours and format

Five CPD units. The seminar is delivered on demand and comprises just over three hours of narrated video across thirteen parts, a written reading lesson of about ninety seven minutes, and a ten question assessment with a pass mark of seventy percent. Completing the assessment produces a CPD certificate in your name.

The reading lesson sets all eleven cases out in writing in a single uniform format, so the cases can be compared with one another and looked up later without returning to the video.

How the cases are taught

Each case follows the same four steps. What the regulator did, what happened inside the firm, which control failed, and what the decision establishes for everyone else. The seminar closes by drawing the eleven together into the failures that recur across all of them: unremediated findings, a control function that was overruled or starved, monitoring mistaken for an alert engine, source of funds never verified, structural blind spots in third party chains, enforcement outcomes that now reach well beyond a fine, and decisions that were never written down.
